What is GIR from Fairway?
Greens in regulation when the approach comes from the fairway — iron play with a clean lie.
How it's calculated
A green in regulation means the ball is on the putting surface with at least two strokes left for par — the green in one on a par 3, two on a par 4, three on a par 5. The tour records it for every hole played, and the figure here is the share of holes meeting that condition across the season.
How to read it
Higher is better. Compared with the from-rough figure it isolates iron play under good conditions.
What it doesn't say
Greens in regulation ignores where on the green the ball finished, so a ball to forty feet counts identically to one to three. It also depends heavily on how far the approaches were, which depends on driving — a short, accurate driver faces easier approaches than the number alone suggests. It says nothing at all about what happened next; a high rate with poor putting still produces ordinary scores.
